Cross posting this from M5board. My E39 just got a new set of genuine LM's so I hope you understand my concerns.
Just need to vent a little, and hoping members with any experience can chime in.
So one of my good friend's was turning 21 so I picked up another friend and headed over to the bar/club. Given I have a few competitions coming up I only enjoyed two brews and still had a good time. Everyone was leaving around 0200 so I hopped in the car and started to drive home. Only a few minutes driving down the highway I see Crown Vic and shortly got pulled over. I asked why I was stopped, and the officer said he looked up my tags and my registration was expired and my DL was suspended
I went to pull out my insurance and registration and found out I left it at home on my desk in the leather book. Then I kinda freaked out, my phone had just died so I couldn't show my insurance or that my license is in good standing. I was written 3 tickets for the insurance, registration and suspended DL. They towed the car and I heard the muffler tips scrape a little while it was going up the flatbed...Here's where it gets iffy.
A few months back I had a speeding ticket that was a week or two overdue and got a suspension notice in the mail. I quickly paid the ticket, overdue fee, and restoration fee. When I go to the DMV website now and check if there is any tickets, restoration fees, etc it shows that I am paid up. I have no clue what is going on here! Also my insurance is fully paid and I have proof when I go to court. The registration I found out (when i got home), was a month expired and I understand was my mistake.
My biggest concern is my car being abused my the tow guys and any damage (cosmetic or mechanical) that might not present itself immediately. I didn't get to see where the car was towed and will be trying to get this all corrected tomorrow. Any insight would be help console me on this sleepless night.

Take cash. Most towing companies do not accept credit cards or checks. Call ahead to find out the fee and terms. Surprised the DMV did not say you had an expired registration. My few experiences with being towed showed that they took good care of my vehicles. They will lose their (lucrative) contract if the screw up much. Accident cars are one thing, plain towed cars are another. Good luck.

sorry about your luck. Get it all straightened out and you'll be oksince some problems were on their end. As for the damage - I don't think either the police or tow company will care. Sorry, I know that sucks but I see you explaining you heard the tips drag and the guy saying "so?"

I'm surprised you were pulled over. The police should never pull out and follow a vehicle close enough to see the registration/plates unless it was speeding, swerving, etc.. I'm not sure the exact time, but I know there is a grace period for expired registration. It's at least one month, I don't know about any longer. I was pulled over a couple of weeks ago (in traffic so the officer saw the plates) and the registration had just expired. It turns out the registration and sticker arrived the next day, but the officer said there was a grace period and to get it as soon as possible.
I hope that the car is fine, but if not, follow up with the damages. File a complaint, get the cost estimated, and hopefully you'll get something out of it.
I wish you the best of luck!

Many police cars are now equipped with cameras that automatically run every license plate to check for violations. I was pulled over last summer around midnight while I was driving in the slow lane a cop passed me in the passing lane then immediately slowed and got behind my car. He pulled me over and the moment he got to the window he informed me that I was very over due for an inspection. The inspection sticker is on the passenger side and he never had any view of it before he pulled me over. It sucks but that is the new world we live in.

That makes sense now. Thanks for the clarification.
